On macOS, where there is no registry, installing most apps is just a matter of copying the program to the “Applications” folder. Go one step further by adding a keyboard shortcut that opens the utility. To do so, right-click the shortcut you just created and choose Properties. Click in the “Shortcut key” text box under the shortcut tab, enter the key combination of your choice (Ctrl-Alt-R is one possibility), and click OK. To search a key, right-click on the key in the left pane and select “Find…” in the popup menu. In the “Find” dialog box which appears, enter the name or value that you want to find.
The Registry files have their hidden, system, and read-only attributes set, so it’s much tougher to delete them accidentally. Even if a user somehow managed to blow away these files, Windows 98 maintains backup copies for easy recovery. To solve all these problems, the Windows 95 designers decided to give the old Windows 3.1 Registry a promotion, so to speak. Specifically, they set it up as the central database for all system and application settings. The Registry maintains this structure in Windows 98. It wasn’t until Windows 3.1 hit the shelves that the Registry saw the light of day, albeit in a decidedly different guise from its Windows 98 descendant.

Values’ shortcut menus have commands to change, delete, and rename them. The main menu has similar commands that apply to the selected subkey or value. Of course, you can always edit a value by double-clicking its name in the value pane, and you can always use the keyboard shortcuts you learned about in Table 3.2, earlier in this chapter. Windows 11 Pro can use a local account, but the steps are a little different. When you get to the initial sign-in options, select Offline Account.
